![]() Basics • Name: Marlene • Birthdate: 13 June 1960 • Citizenship: Scotland - born and raised in Dundee. • Current residence: • Blood status: Fullblood, beginning with her generation. Her mother was technically still considered halfblood. Physical • Height/weight: Nearly five and a half feet (while wearing shoes) / 126lbs. • Hair/eyes: brown/blue • Manner of speech: Marlene has never been afraid to "tell it like it is," and her usually sarcastic tone and sharp tongue has gotten her in trouble more than once. She's very genuine and patient with those who she cares for, though, although her typical tone leads some to think she is being facetious even when she is not. When she get excited, Marlene tends to speak very very quickly, which (when paired with her Scottish lilt) can be a bit difficult for those who don't know her well to catch everything she's saying. Because of this, she's also prone to repeating herself whether people ask for clarification or not. ![]() • Manner of dress: Simply and comfortably. As long as it doesn't stink, Marlene figures that it's fine to wear, so long as she wasn't seen in it the day before and doesn't have any odd multi-coloured stains on it. She doesn't know much about muggle fashions (and likely wouldn't care much about them even if she did) but she is a big fan of blue jeans. They're so much easier to move around in than robes. • Physical description: Marlene has never thought her looks to be anything special. She thankfully has long since grown out of her teenage angst and quiet damnation of her every imagined flaw and is content with being average in the looks department, and even has a few select outfits that she can put on and think that she looks fantastic. Growing up, Marlene was a bit of a bug-eyed, duck-lipped stick creature, hitting puberty early and quite hard, shooting up to 5'5" at the age of 13 and holding fast while the rest of her body took its time filling out. She keeps her brown hair on the long side, it hitting midways down her back, and refuses to ever attempt a short hair-cut again after the disastrous one she claims nearly ruined her entire second year at school. Marlene has the same light blue eyes that have run through her father's side of the family for generations, and fights a never-ending battle to get her eyebrows to cooperate. Over the past year Marlene has put on a bit of weight, although it was weight bringing her up from "twiggy" to "average" sized, and everyone seems to be of the opinion that it looks good on her. Well, with the exception of her little sister Felicity, who thinks that it is totally just not normal for a person to feel comfortable with themselves while over a size 2. • First impression: Sarcastic, spunky, eager. Personal • General personality: Marlene has never been a patient person. She is the sort of person who likes to see results as soon as possible, and, if not so much results, at least enough change to prove that something is getting done. She's been an insomniac since the age of fifteen (which just happened to also be the age at which Marlene discovered her very strong passion for coffee), and has a very difficult time lazing around when there are things that she could be getting done. Wasted potential has always been one of her pet peeves, and she would rather invest herself in the actual process of doing something, rather than wasting time pouring over every last detail of prospective game-plans. Marlene has a very black and white sense of what is right and what is wrong, what is fair and what isn't, and can sometimes have a hard time understanding the perpetual grey area that the majority of people live in. It is a definite plus when in a situation where staying focused is key, but also is a personality flaw that has gotten her into trouble just as often. While never going out of her way to be rude or mean to someone she's just met, once someone wrongs her (or even moreso, one of her friends), she holds grudges that never quite go away, and has no qualms over letting the person know they're on her shitlist. She has always acted on impulse, only stopping to think on new realities after getting smacked with the results her actions have caused, and sometimes not realizing that her actions affect other people until after it's too late to patch things up. Her hastiness isn't out of any lack of intelligence, however. She did well enough in school, although would throw the majority of her concentration into the subjects she was most passionate for (Herbology and Charms) while letting the others fall off the wayside. She's a very bright girl, catching onto new subjects quickly and with a wit that allows her to banter with the best of them, who can think on her toes in a demanding situation. She hates letting her friends and family see her upset, and would much rather be the person who is there for someone, rather than letting someone else be there for her. Having always been stubbornly independent, it's not so much for the fact that she doesn't want to seem weak or helpless, as much as that she doesn't want anyone worrying about her when there are other problems with the world right now that are much more important than any "temporary drama" she might be experiencing. • Strengths and weaknesses: Strengths – great amounts of enthusiasm for her passions, unwavering loyalty to those who've earned her trust, dependability, talent with charms and herb-lore, impulsiveness, an ability to look and act alive before seven in the morning, steadfast, focused and driven, quick both on her feet and with a wand, almost terrifyingly good at spells that involve setting things on fire. Weaknesses – extreme stubbornness and refusal to back down from her personal stance, impulsiveness, holding in her emotions even though she believes doing so will better benefit others, impatience, one-track-minded, can be hot-headed and harsh-tongued without realizing, sloppiness, klutziness with a bad sense of timing, panics in stressful situations, has a hard time learning how to shut up, an incurable caffeine addiction. • Mental health: Great, if a bit on the reckless side of things. Relationships • Relatives: Marlene's father and a 5th generation fullblooded wizard from a non-picky family. He is a former Gryffindor born to two Hufflepuffs and head of the Oblivator Department at the Ministry of Magic. Deceased. Marlene's mother, daughter of Annie and Philbert Kettleburn. A halfblooded witch and former Ravenclaw, Leonie works as a Healer out of the Hogsmeade offices. Deceased Marlene's older sister, a former Ravenclaw Prefect and a secretary for the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad. She married muggleborn wizard Cameron Cullen in June of 1975, and together they had a three year old daughter named Holly. Deceased. (Marlene's older brother and closest sibling, the former Gryffindor quidditch player worked as an elevator attendant at the Ministry of Magic. Until he was attacked by Georgina Wilkes as a message for Marlene to keep her gigantic mouth shut, which left him crippled in both legs. Now he stays at home, recovering, eating, and reading comic books. Deceased Marlene's little sister, a bookish 6th year Gryffindor and probably the most softspoken of all the McKinnons. Which really isn't saying much. Deceased Sophie's muggleborn husband and a former Hufflepuff, Cam became a stay-at-home father to his three year old daughter, occasionally writing articles for The Quibbler. Deceased. Sophie and Cameron's extraordinarily precocious three year old daughter. Deceased. • Relationship with family: The McKinnons are a very close, tight-knit family, although each member is not without their own characteristic flaws and obnoxious quirks, of course. Growing up the McKinnon children definitely bickered, tattling when clothes were borrowed without permission and having arguments made for tenseness at the dinner table for weeks. All in all, though, most of their "major" fights would eventually become stories they'd bring up to laugh over at parties years later. Marlene has always been closest to her father and brother Harlan, as she is much more of a tomboy than her sisters. While her sisters would sit inside and would play around inside the house, Marlene would spend most of her free time outdoors, playing Quidditch with Harlan or reading in the treehouse her dad built them when she was four. In her final few years at Hogwarts, though, Marlene got much closer to her little sister, as they were the only two McKinnons still left at Hogwarts, and Felicity was finally old enough to not be incredibly annoying. And while Sophie and Marlene are not quite as close as the others, Marlene was still a bridesmaid in Sophie's wedding four years ago. Marlene likes to joke that Sophie only asked her so she could see her in a huge poofy dress, but she quietly still appreciates the gesture and thinks that Cameron is a great guy "for putting up with Sophie." She also completely dotes on their daughter Holly, who Marlene thinks is the coolest three-year-old ever. • Sexuality: heterosexual • Significant other: • Children: n/a Educational• School: Hogwarts • Years: 1971 - 1978 • House: Gryffindor • Achievements: Head of Charms Club her 6th and 7th years. • NEWTS: Astronomy - A Charms - O D.A.D.A. - E Herbology - O Potions - E Transfiguration - E Occupational • Occupation: Full time Order Member. She hopes one day to steal Professor Sprout's job at Hogwarts to teach Herbology there. • Previous jobs, if any: babysitting, a highly profitable lemonade stand she ran at the age of eight, and a job as the Herb Girl at Slug and Jigger's Apothecary that she left in July after getting kidnapped from there. The War • How is your character involved in the war? She's a member of the Order of the Phoenix. She can hold her own in a duel, although admittedly not as well as some of her peers, as her D.A.D.A. class sometimes took a back seat to her passion for Herbology and Charms. Marlene's not one to run away from an intense situation, though, and luckily, despite her stubbornness, is quite good at thinking on her feet. She's already looking into recruitment, attempting to get her brother Harlan to join up with the Order's cause. And if a situation ever came up where it wouldn't be a good idea to take someone who was injured to St. Mungo's or a professional Healer, Marlene knows some about healing through both her mother (but not NEARLY enough to be counted as a fully fledged Healer- just enough to be considered a good person to have around in a sticky situation), as well as the medicinal uses some of the magical plants she's studied in Herbology. • Occasionally used aliases: Cassandra Miller - 18 year old halfblood, aspiring journalist, blonde with glasses Athena Lyra Bletchley - 22 year old society pureblood, black hair, green eyes, Irish. Antoinetta Thornfield - 19 year old muggle of Salzburg, Austria Overall History • Family/childhood: The first time that Leonie Kettleburn saw Douglas McKinnon, he was two weeks old. Leonie declared that his head looked like a potato. Leonie's parents apologized profusely for their three year old's precocious manner and sent their daughter into the next room to play with Baby Dougie's big sister Juliana so that the adults could continue cooing over the newborn. Leonie's opinion of Douglas wasn't to change any time soon. In her eyes, he would always be her best friend's annoying little brother with a head shaped like a starch. At some unclear and extraordinary point between Leonie finishing her schooling at Hogwarts and the next time she saw Doug McKinnon, he managed to both grow into his head and the majorly grating, obnoxious aspects of his personality. And Doug, who had always harboured an impossible crush on Juliana's best friend was ecstatic over the fact that Leonie was finally paying attention to him. The two began seeing each other during the summers and holidays when Douglas was home from school, even though it took Juliana an incredibly long time to adjust to the fact that her brother and best mate were dating. A few months after Doug finished his final year, the two made things official, and were married in the following year. Both very career-minded people, the two held off on the possibility of having children until after Leonie had finished her Healer training and Doug had established himself within the Ministry. Finally, in 1956, they had their first child, Sophie, followed by Harlan, Marlene, and Felicity in the years following. Marlene grew up in Dundee, Scotland, in a small wizarding neighbourhood that seemed to be one of the "new hip spots" to start a family for young wizards and witches with small children. She and the girls around her house spent a great deal of time attempting to siege the treehouse that Mr. McKinnon had built for the kids away from the boys (and vice-versa on days when the girls got there first), and playing Aurors with her brother Harlan. Marlene had a tough time at first when her older siblings started going off to school, leaving her stuck at home with Felicity who always only wanted to do girl stuff, and was quite happy to finally receive her Hogwarts letter on her eleventh birthday. • School/work: The sorting hat only wavered on Marlene's head for a few brief moments before sending her off to Gryffindor, a decision that earned Harlan three sickles. (Sophie had her little sister pegged for a future Hufflepuff, and Marlene's two older siblings decided to put money on the hat's decision.) It was a relief to Marlene, though, going into Gryffindor. Even though she'd always been outgoing, talking to anyone who would listen (whether they liked it or not!), Hogwarts itself felt so much bigger than it always had in her imagination, listening to Harlan and Sophie's stories, and the idea of being sorted into a house where she wouldn't have at least one family member terrified her. Going into Gryffindor with Harlan rather than being shuttled into Ravenclaw was preferable anyway, as Marlene had always gotten along better with him, and Sophie had already begun worrying about OWL exams the year before. Most thirteen-year-old boys do not enjoy being followed around by their eleven-year-old sisters, though, and Harlan was no exception. After three days of Marlene shadowing him, her brother started going out of his way to avoid her, forcing the girl to make her own friends with people in her own year. Even though she raged about it for a few hours, convinced that her brother hated her and that she wanted to go home, Marlene quickly got over it when she noticed a group of fellow first year Gryffindors playing exploding snap in the common room, and decided to join them. Within a few weeks she'd made friends both inside and outside of her house, and had already gotten in trouble several times for talking in class without raising her hand. Marlene's years at school seemed to fly by, particularly the earlier years of blissful ignorance as to the war that was quietly brewing outside the castle's walls. She did decently in school, although she is the first to admit that she would have done better had she spent more time studying and less time focusing on her other interests, including spending a ridiculous amount of time in the greenhouses. Her fascination with Herbology seemed to come out of nowhere, unexplained and odd, especially considering the tediousness that can often accompany tending to plants and Marlene's inability to sit still for longer than five minutes. When her fifth year arrived and career counseling rolled around, most people assumed she would be a surefire shot for a future in either the Auror or Hitwizard departments at the Ministry. And while Marlene did consider them both, finding the jobs interesting and respecting the people who put their lives on the line like that for other people, more than anything she knew that in the future she wanted to come back to Hogwarts someday to teach Herbology to a new generation of kids (and hopefully to erase the stigma that only Hufflepuffs were allowed to like the class.) • Recent history: After finishing her schooling, Marlene picked up a job at Slug and Jigger's Apothecary in Diagon Alley, where her supervisor is more than happy to let her hover around in greenery area, tending to the herbage, as Marlene was always very honest about preferring plants to potions. Working at SaJ's has become ever more convenient for Marlene as of late, as the building is located right down the road from the flat Marlene rents with her roommate, Dorcas Meadowes. Her father was a bit disappointed at first that Marlene didn't want to follow him into an occupation at the Ministry of Magic like her older brother and sister did, but quickly changed his mind when he found out that she could get him a discount on potions at the Apothecary. Although Marlene would never admit it to her dad, who has always been a very proud supporter of the Wizarding government, she probably never would have gone into a Ministry job anyway after joining the Order of the Phoenix. The rumours of corruption within the government are almost enough on their own to make Marlene wary, although she figures it's probably best for their cause if there are capable people fighting for them in more than one place. Despite the way Mr. McKinnon glorifies the "Ministry that was," he is not so blinded by his loyalty to his job to have not noticed the way that things have been changing. Although they themselves were fullblooded, they have always believed that muggleborns should be given the same treatment and respect as wizards and witches who've had magic in their bloodlines for centuries, and are not about to change their outspoken opinions on this now, simply because admitting such beliefs are not openly appreciated by an ever-growing number of their peers. On the contrary; Mrs. McKinnon is well known for her habit of hiring in new Muggleborn Healers over those from well-established families, finding their knowledge of muggle medicine to be fascinating. There are some who consider this to be a reverse form of bloodism, with Leonie giving preference to those from muggle families, although she has explained on several occasions that she doesn't hire based on blood, she hires based on an ability to bring something new to the job and a determination to do their best over employing them based on their family's name. Meanwhile, Marlene's father, head of the Ministry's Obliviator department, has caught an extreme amount of flack in recent years for his zero-tolerance policy for those in his department who decide to "have a bit of fun" with the muggles whose memories they are assigned to modify, not hesitating to let go of those from very powerful families or those who've worked there longer than Doug has been alive if he catches them messing with someone's mind any further than they were supposed to. While Marlene's sister Sophie is not actively out running the streets, tossing daisies at Death Eaters and tying herself to trees in muggle schoolyards, she keeps involved and informed in her own quiet way from within her home, wanting to do whatever will ultimately be safest for her daughter Holly. Beyond "tarnishing her name by breeding with a mudblood," Sophie's name has a tendency to show up on any and every list of names calling for change that shows up on the desks of the government officials. Whether it's for muggleborn, troll, giant, house elf, werewolf, or vampire rights, if a petition for peace and acceptance of a group floating around, Sophie McKinnon-Cullen's name is on it, with her husband Cameron's name following right after. In fact, if Cameron, a former Hufflepuff and writer for The Quibbler, had his way, he'd like to see the Statute of Secrecy abolished as a whole, believing that things would be much simpler if muggles were allowed to know about the existence of wizards and witches. While Marlene's brother Harlan doesn't agree with getting rid of it completely, (He once went with his muggle then-girlfriend Charlotte to see her little brother in his secondary school's production of The Crucible, which was enough to convince him that alerting the masses all at once to the presence of magic in the world might be a bad idea.) he has made his presence known at several rallies and protests designed to make things better for those can't help not being born into a long line of wizards. While Harlan doesn't exactly have the most glamorous job at the Ministry, acting as the elevator operator puts him in a prime location for hearing new gossip and opinions, while allowing him plenty of time outside of work to put the things he overhears to use, feeding Cameron several leads for the paper. He also makes quite a case for wizards needing to be more accepting of muggle technology, believing that ignoring its existence only furthers the divide between the two societies, and has done a decent amount of research into finding ways to create magical substitutes for electricity for homes with old magic. He hasn't really gotten anywhere with it, and is not sure if he ever will, but Harlan will not be dissuaded. He wants a television. |
